Why a Global Citizens’ Assembly?
Our global governance systems are no longer fit to address the compounding crises the planet is facing.
Citizens’ assemblies can create a political mandate for change by enabling large numbers of people to design solutions - and have been proven to do so when politicians can’t.
Citizens’ assemblies are accelerating action on some of the toughest issues across the world, by offering an antidote to polarization, promoting inclusion, activating citizens, and generating solidarity and understanding.
Why now?
In September 2024, the world’s leaders will gather for the UN Summit of the Future, aiming to “forge a new global consensus on what our future should look like” and to “address gaps in global governance”.
The Summit offers a unique opportunity to move beyond piecemeal approaches to citizen participation. A permanent Global Citizens’ Assembly would restore trust in global governance, provide people with routes to action on the issues that affect them, and decentralize power.
